ORIGINAL CUBAN ART
La Bodeguita's walls are filled with a collection of watercolors, drawings, photographs, and oil paintings. While some of the pieces belong to our permanent collection, others are available for purchase. Currently, we are featuring works from Alejandro Lazo.
Alejandro Lazo (b. 1970 - ) is a self-taught artist who was born and raised in Havana, Cuba. His first solo exhibit was in 1994 at the Galeria Domingo Ravenet in Cuba. Subsequently, Lazo has held many international exhibitions. These recently include Havana Gallery in Chicago, Espace 12 in Boston, and The Center for Cuban Studies and the Metropolitan Pavillion Gallery in New York. He is currently represented at five galleries in Cuba and has several works in private collections throughout
Europe and the U.S.
Lazo's works, featured here at La Bodeguita, depict his deep, spiritual belief in the religion of Palo Monte, an offshoot of the Afro-Cuban religions. These recent paintings use symbolism to convey the primary principles of Palo Monte. When looking at the current works on display at Bodeguita, one notices the "+" and "o" symbols on each character. These represent good and bad energy respectively. The religion of Palo Monte stresses that individual's strive to obtain a balance of the two and emphasizes that each person has the "possibility of choice". If you are interested in viewing other works of Lazo's or learning about the other Cuban artists featured in the restaurant, please contact Michael or Lara...
